I first tried ooey gooey butter cake at a family gathering, and it was so sweet and rich, it caught me completely off guard — in the best way. I had never heard of it before, but after one bite, I knew I had to make it myself. Ooey Gooey is a delicious sweet southern dense and rich cake made with minimal ingredients that you can create at home! With a box of yellow cake mix, a block of cream cheese, a box powdered sugar (yep a whole box!) and a drop of vanilla extract, you can create a seriously sweet cake that everyone will want a slice of! Whether you are creating this for a group of friends, a family gathering, or just for yourself as a snack, you will surely have fun eating this delicious cake.

Main Ingreidients

There are only 5 ingredients to make this cake!

  • A Yellow Cake Box Mix – For the base of the cake I used Betty Crockers Super Moist Yellow Cake Mix, but you can also another brand.
  • A box or 1lb of Powdered Sugar – A whole box of powdered sugar may seem like a lot, but it really gives the ooey gooey it’s signature sweet taste!
  • Vanilla Extract – I used 365 vanilla extract. You can also experiment on your own with Almond Extract, but make sure to use minimal almond extract so it will not be too overpowering.
  • 4 Eggs – We will put two eggs in the cake base of the ooey gooey to make it nice and moist, and two eggs in the cream cheese.
  • A stick of Butter – I used salted butter, but you can also used unsalted if your prefer.

Tips From Me to You!

  • Make sure that your butter and cream cheese is room temperature so it will be easier to stir. I learned this the hard way. If you already mixed cold cream cheese and your top layer is a bit lumpy, don’t worry! It will still taste good.
  • Do not overbake it! When you take the ooey gooey out the oven it make be a tad bit jiggly in the center. Not watery like a pond in your pan. As long as your edges are nice and crispy and your top layer of cream cheese has a nice glaze, you are free to take it out and let it cool.
  • Yes, let it cool! No matter how good it smells, you have to resist and allow the ooey gooey to cool so you can cut it into nice neat squares.
  • For a cleaner cut, put your knife under a sink in hot water to get it nice and warm, then slice your ooey gooey. It is normal for your knife to get a bit cakey, but the hot water can help with that!
